For immediate release Contact: Jason Meyer September 13, 2006 (260) 356-5324 ext. 128 Elizabeth Abbott of Huntington was honored with the Area 3 Spirit of Special Olympics Award on Tuesday, September 12th. Abbott, the oldest daughter of Jack & Debra Abbott, both of Huntington has been a Special Olympic athlete since 1990. Abbott trained and competed in track & field and swimming while a student at Huntington County Community Schools and has been in Pathfinder Services Inc.’s Special Olympic program ever since she graduated. Carol Austin, Community Recreation Specialist of Pathfinder Services Inc. and Huntington County Special Olympic Coordinator nominated Abbott for the award. Elizabeth’s family has been heavily involved in her career as a Special Olympian, and with the Huntington County Special Olympics. Her parents are always willing to help get athletes to and from swim practices as well as volunteering for various fundraising activities for the Huntington County Special Olympic Program. Debra, Abbott’s mother said, “We have taken the family every year to the Special Olympics state competition. Elizabeth is the oldest of five, and the most memorable experience I have is the excitement I feel, to see her competing. I enjoy being up in the bleachers and being a part of it, it is a very rewarding experience.” Abbott will be honored at the 2006 Special Olympics Indiana State Conference that will take place February 2 - 4 in Indianapolis. Pathfinder Services, Inc. is a not-for-profit human services organization based in Huntington, where it was founded in 1966.
