Disability Awareness Month

Posted 03/02/2023

HUNTINGTON, IN - Pathfinder Services, the City of Huntington, the City of Wabash, and the City of Plymouth are collaborating to celebrate Disability Awareness Month in March with several scheduled events.

Mayoral Proclamations were made by Huntington Mayor Richard Strick, Plymouth Mayor Mark Senter, and Wabash Mayor Scott Long earlier this week, launching a month of awareness.

“The involvement and passion of Mayor Strick, Mayor Senter, and Mayor Long to be more inclusive and to raise awareness and understanding of the barriers people with disabilities face daily are inspiring.”

Says Danielle Tips, President and CEO of Pathfinder Services.

Beginning Monday, March 13, through Friday, March 17, Spirit Week will take place with different colors representing different disabilities each day. Everyone is encouraged to wear yellow on Monday to highlight Communication Disabilities, blue on Tuesday for Intellectual Disabilities, green on Wednesday for Psychological Disabilities, orange on Thursday for Physical Disabilities, and Purple every Friday in March for Disability Awareness Month in general.

Other events include Painting with the Mayor. This is a fun and collaborative art project where the mayors of Huntington, Plymouth, and Wabash join our artists in the studio to create a unique work of art. This year each project will focus on a landmark within each city. Stay tuned for the grand reveal once those are complete.

Dates for Painting with the Mayor are Huntington- March 21st, Plymouth- March 29th, and Wabash- March 31st.

Huntington City and Huntington City-Township Library will host an Inclusive Storytime- with ASL on Saturday, March 25th.

It’s clear that the many communities we are a part of honor and celebrate people who have disabilities. The commitments made by Huntington, Plymouth, and Wabash show they envision a more inclusive world to be a better world. These events show that people with disabilities have talent and that people with disabilities want the same things as everyone else.

Join us this month in honoring, celebrating, and educating about disabilities.
